The white blood cells repel the pathogens entering from outside with the help of reactive oxygen. With that strong sterilizing property, they exterminate pathogens and toxic substances. When bacteria and virus invade the body, cells called Neutrophil (accounts for about 55-65% of total white blood cells and plays the most important role in biological defense mechanisms against bacterial infections) and Macrophage produce reactive oxygen by themselves. Without this reactive oxygen, it is difficult for us to keep on living. It is said that that about 1-3% of the oxygen taken within the body, is reactive oxygen.
Since the oxygen in this state has strong oxidizing power, it is called "reactive oxygen" as stated in the previous section. When it becomes unstable, it tries to actively connect with the materials nearby. However, the oxygen taken within the body via breathing becomes extremely unstable due to metabolic process that create energy.
Within the atmosphere, oxygen is relatively stable. Oxygen is the most energy efficient element among all.
